Zillar Barta Desk : US economist and geopolitical commentator Jeffrey Sachs has called for a diplomatic approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, arguing that Ukraine should remain a neutral country and that NATO should halt further enlargement toward Russia.
Sachs has previously advocated a negotiated settlement under which Ukraine’s sovereignty and security would be guaranteed while NATO would commit not to expand eastward. He has also argued that neutral countries, including India, could play a constructive role in helping facilitate and enforce a peace agreement.
Against this backdrop, Sachs has urged Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to publicly articulate a position against further NATO enlargement and in favour of Ukrainian neutrality. His comments place India’s diplomatic role in the Ukraine conflict under renewed focus, particularly as New Delhi continues to advocate dialogue and diplomacy.
Sachs’ position has been controversial. Critics have disputed his interpretation of NATO expansion and the origins of the Ukraine war, while he maintains that the expansion of the Western alliance contributed significantly to the security tensions that preceded the conflict.
India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving the Ukraine conflict. Sachs’ latest remarks therefore add another dimension to the international debate over how a sustainable peace agreement could be achieved.
