Zillar Barta Desk : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India’s 7.8% real GDP growth in the April-June quarter of FY 2026-27, describing the performance as a significant achievement amid global economic uncertainty.
According to official government data, India’s economy grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of the current financial year, compared with 6.9% in the same quarter a year earlier. The growth came despite international challenges, including oil price shocks, supply-chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
PM Modi said the growth reflected the collective strength and resilience of the Indian people. He described the 7.8% expansion as a “herculean feat” achieved during a period of global uncertainty and stressed the need to maintain the momentum.
The Prime Minister also said that India’s economic performance demonstrated resilience despite disruptions in global supply chains and energy markets. He called for continued efforts towards greater self-reliance and sustained economic growth.
The latest GDP figure was also stronger than the Reserve Bank of India’s earlier 7% growth forecast for the quarter. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the performance reflected the contribution of people across the economy and pointed to services activity and other economic drivers.
The 7.8% growth figure has nevertheless generated debate over the quality and distribution of economic growth, with opposition voices questioning whether the headline GDP number is translating into sufficient employment and household prosperity.
With global economic conditions remaining uncertain, the government has emphasised sustaining growth while strengthening domestic capabilities and reducing vulnerability to external shocks.
