Zillar Barta Desk,New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday. Ethiopia is among the expanded BRICS member countries, and Abiy is attending the summit hosted by India.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed strengthening the longstanding relationship between India and Ethiopia and explored opportunities for greater cooperation. The talks assume significance as both countries seek to deepen collaboration within the expanded BRICS framework.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on Ethiopia's membership of BRICS and appreciated Ethiopia's participation in the grouping. Abiy, in turn, acknowledged India's support for Ethiopia's entry into the BRICS family.
The meeting comes as the 2026 BRICS Summit focuses on strengthening cooperation in areas including trade and investment, technology, food and energy security, global governance and multilateralism. The summit has brought together leaders and senior representatives from across the expanded BRICS grouping.
The India-Ethiopia engagement reflects New Delhi's broader effort to strengthen partnerships with African countries and use BRICS as a platform for increased economic and strategic cooperation among emerging economies. Ethiopia's participation also highlights the growing role of African nations within the expanded grouping.
