Cuba–US Envoys Clash at UN General Assembly as Cuban Foreign Minister Calls Mike Waltz a ‘Liar’

Zillar Barta Desk,UNITED NATIONS, New York: Tensions between the United States and Cuba erupted into a heated verbal confrontation at the United Nations General Assembly, after US Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla exchanged angry remarks during a debate over Washington's longstanding economic embargo against the Caribbean island.

The confrontation took place on October 27, 2026, as the General Assembly prepared to vote on a resolution calling for an end to the US economic embargo on Cuba. The exchange disrupted the proceedings and prompted the suspension of the meeting, highlighting the growing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Havana.

The verbal clash began after Waltz took the podium to defend the US position and criticise Cuba's socialist government. He raised allegations of corruption and repression, arguing that the international community should not support the resolution condemning American sanctions.

Members of the Cuban delegation responded with loud objections, demanding that their procedural concerns be heard. Rodríguez subsequently approached the assembly's leadership and accused the American envoy of lying.

“You are a liar!” Rodríguez shouted during the confrontation, according to reports from the meeting. Waltz responded by demanding that the Cuban representative move away from the podium and insisting that he would not be intimidated.

Heated Exchange Forces Suspension of UN Proceedings

The argument quickly escalated, breaking with the diplomatic decorum normally expected in the General Assembly chamber. As officials attempted to restore order, Waltz repeatedly called on the Cuban delegation to step back from the podium.

The US ambassador defended his position, stating that he represented the United States and would not allow himself to be intimidated. Rodríguez, meanwhile, maintained that Waltz's statements were false and disrespectful to Cuba and the member states represented at the United Nations.

United Nations General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman attempted to calm the situation and urged the delegations to return to their seats. With the exchange continuing, he announced the suspension of the meeting.

The incident was subsequently captured in video footage and circulated widely, drawing attention to the increasingly confrontational nature of the diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

Long-Running Dispute Over the US Embargo

At the centre of the confrontation is the US economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba, a policy that has remained a major source of disagreement between the two nations for more than six decades.

Washington has defended its restrictive measures by citing concerns about Cuba's political system, human rights and governance. The Trump administration has intensified pressure on Havana, seeking changes in the country's political and economic direction.

Cuban authorities, however, argue that American sanctions have contributed significantly to the country's economic difficulties, restricting access to finance, trade and essential supplies. Havana has repeatedly called for the embargo to be lifted, describing it as a policy that imposes hardship on ordinary Cubans.

The dispute has become particularly sensitive amid reports of fuel shortages, widespread electricity disruptions and difficulties accessing essential goods in Cuba. The US government's increased pressure on countries supplying oil to the island has added another dimension to the disagreement.
