Zillar Barta Desk : The Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dr. Dinesh Sharma, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The meeting comes shortly after Sharma assumed charge as the Union Territory’s 14th Lieutenant Governor.
Dr. Dinesh Sharma took oath as Lieutenant Governor on September 15, succeeding Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd.), who had served in the post since October 2017.
Sharma, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and former Rajya Sabha member, was appointed to the post by President Droupadi Murmu earlier this month. He had resigned from the Rajya Sabha on September 11 following his appointment.
The meeting with Prime Minister Modi is part of Sharma’s engagements following his assumption of office. A day earlier, on September 21, he also paid a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and expressed his commitment to the all-round development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold strategic importance because of their location in the Indian Ocean, while connectivity, tourism, infrastructure and development remain important areas for the Union Territory.
