Zillar Barta Desk : US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Spain over the ongoing migrant crisis in Ceuta, accusing the country of having “ZERO control” over its border and describing the situation as “so sad.” Trump made the remarks in a social-media post as political and public pressure continues to grow over the handling of the crisis.
The comments come after a large influx of migrants into Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on Morocco’s northern coast. Spanish authorities have described the episode as an unprecedented strain on border control, reception facilities and public services. Spain subsequently declared the situation one of national-security interest to enable greater coordination between state and local authorities.
The crisis has also triggered protests in Ceuta, with residents demanding stronger border controls and action from Madrid. Thousands took part in demonstrations as tensions surrounding migration, accommodation and public services continued to rise.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has defended his government's response, saying security forces faced a sudden and complex situation and that the government has taken steps to reinforce the border and manage the humanitarian consequences. Madrid says most of those who crossed during the mass influx have already been returned to Morocco.
