Zillar Barta Desk,New Delhi : SGS India, a leading testing, inspection and certification company, has showcased its advanced rice-testing technology at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026 in New Delhi. The company highlighted its ability to test around 750 molecules in a single run using advanced laboratory equipment, with pesticide residue analysis reports available within approximately 24 to 72 hours, depending on testing requirements.

Advanced Technology for Rice Quality Testing

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Aswathy V. Krishnan, Head of Digital Sensory and Advanced Centre for Testing at SGS India, explained how the company is demonstrating modern testing procedures to help rice exporters, buyers and other industry stakeholders assess product quality and safety.

SGS has established a dedicated experience zone at the conference, allowing visitors to understand how rice samples are examined for physical defects, microbiological contamination and harmful substances such as aflatoxins.

The company is also demonstrating how contaminated rice can be identified and explaining the potential risks associated with fungal growth and pesticide residues.

750 Molecules Tested in a Single Run

One of the key highlights of the demonstration is the use of Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), an advanced analytical technique used to detect and measure multiple chemical substances in samples.

According to Krishnan, the technology can analyse approximately 750 molecules in a single run. The turnaround time for testing depends on the specific requirements, with pesticide residue analysis generally taking around 24 to 72 hours.

This capability can help exporters and buyers obtain important laboratory results more quickly, enabling them to make informed decisions about the quality and regulatory compliance of rice consignments.

Helping Exporters Meet International Standards

The development comes amid growing concerns about rice shipments being rejected in international markets because of pesticide residues, aflatoxins and other contaminants. Different importing countries follow specific food-safety regulations, making accurate laboratory testing essential for exporters.

By identifying potential problems before shipments reach their destinations, advanced testing facilities can help businesses reduce compliance risks, avoid unnecessary delays and protect their commercial interests.

SGS has also highlighted the importance of its international laboratory network, which enables businesses to access testing and inspection services across different markets.

Strengthening India's Position in Global Rice Trade

India is a major player in the international rice market, supplying a wide range of rice varieties to countries across the Middle East, Europe, Africa and other regions. Maintaining product quality and meeting destination-specific regulatory requirements are essential for sustaining this position.

The demonstrations at BIRC 2026 underline the growing importance of scientific testing, food safety and quality assurance in agricultural exports.

As global buyers increasingly demand reliable quality verification and compliance with food-safety standards, advanced laboratory technologies such as LC-MS/MS are expected to play an important role in supporting Indian rice exporters and strengthening confidence in the country's agricultural products.

The showcase by SGS India highlights how faster and more comprehensive testing can contribute to safer food supplies, smoother international trade and improved competitiveness for India's rice industry.
