New Delhi: India and the United Kingdom held bilateral discussions on strengthening cooperation in space science, nuclear energy and emerging technologies during a meeting with UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Trade Jonathan Reynolds. The discussions focused on expanding scientific collaboration, promoting innovation and exploring new opportunities for industrial and technological development.

The meeting highlighted the growing importance of India-UK cooperation in strategic sectors that are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the global economy. Both sides explored avenues for closer engagement between scientific institutions, research organisations and technology enterprises to encourage knowledge-sharing, innovation and the development of advanced technologies.

Focus on Space Science and Satellite Development

Space technology was among the key areas discussed during the meeting. India and the UK explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in space science, satellite development and research.

Collaboration in these fields could create opportunities for scientific institutions and technology companies to exchange expertise, develop innovative solutions and support advancements in satellite-based applications. Such cooperation can also contribute to progress in areas including communications, Earth observation, scientific research and other space-related technologies.

The discussions reflected the potential for stronger partnerships between the two countries' scientific and industrial communities, particularly as space technology continues to expand its role in economic development and technological innovation.

Nuclear Energy and Small Modular Reactors

Another major focus of the discussions was cooperation in nuclear energy, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and advanced nuclear technologies.

SMRs are nuclear reactors designed with smaller power capacities than conventional nuclear power plants. Depending on their design and deployment, they may offer flexible options for electricity generation and could support energy requirements in certain industrial and infrastructure settings.

India and the UK explored opportunities related to advanced nuclear technologies and associated industrial capabilities. The discussions also considered the relevance of these technologies in meeting growing energy demand, supporting industrial development, advancing electrification and addressing the increasing electricity requirements of data centres.

As digital infrastructure and data-intensive industries expand, reliable and low-carbon electricity generation is becoming an increasingly important consideration for governments and businesses. Cooperation in advanced nuclear technologies could provide opportunities for research, engineering, manufacturing and the development of specialised industrial expertise, subject to regulatory and technical requirements.

Expanding India-UK Technology Partnerships

The discussions also underlined the importance of emerging technologies in strengthening economic ties between the two countries. Greater collaboration between research institutions, technology enterprises and industrial partners could help accelerate innovation and open new avenues for investment.

By exploring cooperation across space science, nuclear energy and advanced technologies, India and the UK are seeking to identify areas of mutual interest that can support long-term economic growth and technological progress.

The meeting with Jonathan Reynolds provided a platform to discuss potential areas of collaboration in sectors that are increasingly important to energy security, industrial competitiveness and the future of digital infrastructure.

As both countries continue to explore opportunities for closer engagement, cooperation in strategic technologies could become an important component of their broader economic and industrial relationship.
