PM Modi Congratulates Indian Women’s Hockey Team on Historic Asian Games Gold After 44-Year Wait

Zillar Barta Desk,New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian women’s hockey team after the side created history by winning the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India defeated defending champions China 1-0 in a closely contested final, ending a 44-year wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey title.

The historic victory marked only the second time that India’s women’s hockey team has won the Asian Games gold. The previous triumph came in 1982, when the team claimed the title in New Delhi. After more than four decades of waiting, the Indian side once again reached the top of the continental competition with a determined performance against China.

PM Modi Hails Team’s Historic Achievement

Following the final, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the players and highlighted the importance of the achievement for Indian hockey. The Prime Minister’s Office described the triumph as a special moment for Indian hockey, pointing to the team's skills, teamwork and determination.

The congratulatory message came soon after the final whistle, as celebrations began across the country. The victory generated widespread reactions from sporting personalities, public figures and supporters who welcomed the return of the Asian Games women’s hockey title to India after 44 years.

The Prime Minister’s message also recognised the significance of the team’s collective effort. Rather than being the result of an individual performance alone, India’s victory was built around disciplined defending, composure under pressure and the ability to protect a narrow lead against a strong Chinese side.

Lalremsiami Provides the Decisive Moment

The final was decided by a single goal. Indian forward Lalremsiami found the breakthrough and scored the only goal of the match, giving India a 1-0 advantage.

The goal proved decisive as China, the defending Asian Games champions, continued to search for an equaliser. India’s defence remained organised throughout the remainder of the contest and successfully prevented China from finding the back of the net.

The occasion was particularly memorable for Lalremsiami, as the goal came during her 200th senior international appearance. Her decisive contribution ultimately became the defining attacking moment of India's gold-medal campaign.

Savita Punia’s Crucial Save

While Lalremsiami provided the goal, goalkeeper Savita Punia played an important role in preserving India's advantage.

China earned a penalty opportunity during the match, but Savita produced a crucial save to prevent the defending champions from drawing level. Her intervention helped India maintain its slender advantage during a tense period of the final.

As the match progressed, China increased the pressure and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. India's defensive unit, however, continued to hold firm. The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory and triggered celebrations among the players and coaching staff.

44 Years After the 1982 Triumph

India's previous Asian Games women's hockey gold had come in 1982. Since then, the team had experienced both strong campaigns and disappointing finishes while attempting to reclaim the continental crown.

The Indian team came close to another gold medal on several occasions, including finishing as runners-up in 1998 and 2018. The 2026 triumph therefore ended one of the longest waits in Indian women's hockey at the Asian Games.

The victory in Japan now gives the current generation of players a place in the history of Indian hockey alongside the 1982 gold-medal-winning side.

Gold Medal Also Secures Olympic Qualification

The achievement carries significance beyond the Asian Games medal itself. By winning the women's hockey title, India secured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The Olympic qualification provides the Indian team with another major international target. The squad will now have the opportunity to prepare for the Los Angeles Games as Asia's champions.

For the players and support staff, the Asian Games gold therefore represents both the culmination of a 44-year wait and the beginning of another important phase in the team's international journey.

Celebrations Across Indian Sport

The women's hockey triumph prompted congratulations from several prominent figures. The Prime Minister’s Office, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and other public figures welcomed the historic result.

The wider Indian sporting community also celebrated the achievement as part of a strong day for the country's athletes at the Asian Games. India collected multiple gold medals on October 2, including in hockey, boxing, wrestling and archery.

The women's hockey gold was particularly significant because it ended a four-decade wait and came against the defending Asian champions.

A Landmark Moment for Indian Women’s Hockey

The 2026 Asian Games final will be remembered as an important chapter in Indian women's hockey. A single goal from Lalremsiami, a crucial save from Savita Punia and a disciplined defensive display combined to deliver the gold medal.

For Indian hockey supporters, the result brings back the Asian Games women's title after 44 years. For the players, it represents the reward for their campaign in Japan and provides momentum ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's congratulatory message reflected the national significance attached to the achievement, while the team's performance on the field provided the foundation for one of India's most notable sporting moments at the 2026 Asian Games.

After waiting since 1982, India once again stands at the top of Asian women's hockey.
