Zillar Barta Desk : US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded Xi’s three-day state visit to the United States with a tour of the National Archives in Washington on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, Trump described his talks with Xi as a “great meeting,” saying the discussions had produced positive developments for both countries. He particularly highlighted benefits for American farmers and said that “a lot of very positive things” had emerged from the visit.
The National Archives visit followed a meeting at the White House and a private tea hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The two presidential couples viewed some of the United States’ most important founding documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Trump and Xi also discussed the long history of their respective countries. Trump noted the contrast between the United States’ 250-year history and China’s much longer historical record, while emphasizing American pride in its founding heritage.
The visit came amid ongoing discussions between Washington and Beijing over trade, agriculture, artificial intelligence and other strategic issues. Although the summit featured extensive diplomatic ceremony and public displays of cooperation, reports noted that no major breakthrough was announced on some of the most difficult issues facing the two countries.
Xi is expected to leave Washington following the National Archives tour, concluding his first US state visit in more than a decade. The two leaders are also expected to meet again at upcoming international summits, including the APEC meeting in China and the G20 summit in the United States.
